Plan Your Visit

The Hartman Rock Garden is open daily — for free — from dawn to dusk. Donations are accepted in the garden using the secure donation bin, and online using the button above. Most visitors explore the site using our self-guided Highlight Tour (ages 16+) or self-guided Kids Tour (ages 6-15). These printed tour books are available for free in our visitor kiosk. We also offer guided tours on occasion. Free parking is available along the street.

Directions

The Hartman Rock Garden is located at 1905 Russell Avenue in Springfield, Ohio, a short drive from Interstate 70. The garden sits on three residential lots surrounding the Hartman House (now the residence of our Facilities Manager). We recommend using a mapping program if you are visiting from out of town or are unfamiliar with the neighborhood.

Guidelines and Rules

Mary Hartman always said “Visitors are welcome if they know how to behave. This is my home…” We operate the garden today with the same philosophy. Here are some basic additional guidelines:

      • All children must be accompanied by an adult
      • Please do not touch any of the objects in the garden
      • No smoking is allowed on the property
      • Please do not walk in the flower beds
      • The shed and house are not typically open to visitors
      • Pets must be carried when inside the garden.

Accessibility

Due to the narrowness of Ben Hartman’s original concrete sidewalks, people using walkers or wheelchairs may need assistance to see parts of the Hartman Rock Garden. We are currently in the middle of an Accessibility Plan that will help fix some of these issues, including widening the non-original entry sidewalks, introducing a curb cut, removing two small steps, and reestablishing missing sidewalks in the main garden. However, the design of our visionary environment does not allow us to widen all of the sidewalks. We will do everything possible to ensure that all visitors are able to enjoy Ben Hartman’s remarkable art.

Photography Policy

Both professional and amateur photography is allowed and encouraged on site. We ask that you stay on the sidewalks or in the grass when taking photos. Please do not stand in the flower beds unless you receive permission in advance. We reserve the right to revoke the usage rights if we feel that photography is not being used in a manner that is in keeping with the brand/image of the garden. We ask that photographers/artists notify us before visiting the garden for larger projects (i.e. wedding photography), which can interrupt the flow of regular visitors. We also ask that photographers/artists make an appropriate donation to support the garden. This donation is up to each individual artist. A donation bin is located on site.
