Plan Your Visit
The Hartman Rock Garden is open daily — for free — from dawn to dusk. Most visitors explore the site using our self-guided Highlight Tour (ages 13+) or self-guided Kids Tour (ages 6-13). These printed tour books are available for free in our visitor kiosk. For information on our occasional guided tours, click here. Parking is available along the street for free. While it is free to visit the Hartman Rock Garden, we encourage visitors to support our work by making a donation in the red on-site donation site or through our website.
Directions
The Hartman Rock Garden is located at 1905 Russell Avenue in Springfield, Ohio, a short drive from Interstate 70. The garden sits on three residential lots surrounding the Hartman House (now the residence of our Facilities Manager). We recommend using a mapping program if you are visiting from out of town or are unfamiliar with the neighborhood.
Guidelines and Rules
Mary Hartman always said “Visitors are welcome if they know how to behave. This is my home…” We operate the garden today with the same philosophy. Here are some basic additional guidelines:
-
-
- All children must be accompanied by an adult
- Please do not touch any of the objects in the garden
- No smoking is allowed on the property
- Please do not walk in the flower beds
- The shed and house are not typically open to visitors
- Pets must be carried when inside the garden.

Accessibility
With the completion of our Visionary Art for All project, the Hartman Rock Garden is now accessible to people using wheelchairs and walkers. However, the design of our visionary environment does not allow us to widen all of the sidewalks, so people may still need assistance to visit some parts of the site. In 2023, we launched our new Touch Tour for visitors who are blind or have low vision. Click here for more information. We will continue study new solutions to ensure that all visitors are able to enjoy Ben Hartman’s remarkable art.
Photography Policy
Both professional and amateur photography is allowed and encouraged on site. We ask that you stay on the sidewalks or in the grass when taking photos. Please do not stand in the flower beds unless you receive permission in advance. We reserve the right to revoke the usage rights if we feel that photography is not being used in a manner that is in keeping with the brand/image of the garden. We ask that photographers/artists notify us before visiting the garden for larger projects (i.e. wedding photography), which can interrupt the flow of regular visitors. We also ask that photographers/artists make an appropriate donation to support the garden. This donation is up to each individual artist. A donation bin is located on site.
